Five New Members Join the Hall of Fame in 2013

Master of Ceremonies, Bob Norton, and the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Board of Directors welcomed five new inductees into the New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame, as a crowd of more than 280 family members, friends, dignitaries and guests looked on. The Legends also paid tribute to Concord High School’s Boys’ and Girl’s ice hockey programs and their tradition of excellence, including 8 State Championships. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on October 27, 2013 at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord and marked the NH Legends’ twelfth year holding the event.

Greg Moffett, current President of the Legends’ Board of Directors, welcomed the large audience and thanked them for supporting the 2013 Hall of Fame inductees and the Concord High hockey program. Moffett offered special thanks to Bauer Hockey, the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Hall of Fame Ceremony, for its continuing support of the Legends’ mission, and he praised this year’s Co-Title Sponsors, St. Paul’s School and Vachon Clukay& Company, PC., for their significant financial contributions. Moffett also recognized New Hampshire Distributors, Inc. which again hosted the pre-event Social Hour, and thanked the 27 other individuals and businesses who helped make the Hall of Fame Ceremony possible through their Gold, Silver, and Bronze-level sponsorships.

The Honorable Governor Maggie Hassan congratulated this year’s Hall of Fame inductees and praised them for their significant accomplishments and achievements. The Governor spoke of her appreciation for the game of hockey and the team-building skills and self-confidence it promotes. She also spoke directly to the current members of the Concord High Girls’ Hockey team who attended and encouraged them to reach for the sky. Governor Hassan concluded her remarks by providing State of New Hampshire Citations for each of the 2013 inductees.

State Senator Lou D’Alessandro, longtime Legends supporter and a former Board member, delivered State Senate Resolutions, honoring each of the members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013. Concord Mayor, Jim Bouley, extended a welcome on behalf of the Capital City and briefly traced the history of ice hockey in the City of Concord, from the first hockey game played in 1883 at St. Paul’s School to the more recent Black Ice Pond Hockey Championship at White Park. Bouley remarked that the Black Ice event will be held at Concord’s White Park again this year in late January, and he encouraged everyone to participate.

Tara Mounsey

Keynote speaker, Tara Mounsey,  a two-time Olympic ice hockey medalist and former Concord High standout, recalled her early days playing in the Concord Youth Hockey system and of the various parents, coaches, and friends from within the Greater-Concord community and across the state who influenced her outstanding hockey career. Mounsey, who is currently a Nurse Practitioner, spoke of the valuable relationships she’s developed through hockey and of the life-lessons hockey taught her along the way. Mounsey also praised the current Concord Girl’s Hockey Coach, Stacy Boudrias, and offered that the Concord High Girls program is poised to do great things in the future under Coach Boudrias’s leadership.

The Legends recognized the Concord High School Crimson Tide, whose boys’ team played its first season in 1933-34 and has won 8 State Titles between 1977 and 2010. Concord High teams have competed in 19 State Championship Title Games. During the luncheon, attendees were shown a video tribute to the Crimson Tide boy’s and girls teams, recapping various Concord High victories.

Duncan Matthews, former Boys’ Coach at Concord High, recounted his days growing up across the street from Concord’s White Park, watching players like Rusty Martin play on the White Park Pond in the early 60’s. Mathews recalled his days as the Captain of the Crimson Tide hockey team in 1969-70 and, eventually, coaching CHS for two years. Matthews had special words of praise for Concord High’s current boy’s hockey coach, Dunc Walsh, and his string of successes behind the bench.

Concord High School principal Gene Connolly thanked the Legends for honoring their school this year and for recognizing the great ice hockey tradition of the Crimson Tide. President Moffett presented Mr. Connolly with a replica jersey from Concord’s first Championship season in 1976-77. Connolly thanked Moffett and the Legends for the gift, which he said will be placed in the School’s trophy case.

Executive Director Jim Hayes announces the team that will be honored during the 2014 Hockey Hall of Fame Ceremony. “In 2014, the Legends will be honoring a school whose Boy’s team has long been a cornerstone of Division I Hockey. This school began playing ice hockey in 1933 and is celebrating its 80th year of competition this year. In addition, this school’s Girls’ program, founded in 1987, is entering its 27th year of play. The school’s Boys’ teams have competed in 15 NHIAA State Championship games, winning 8 of them, and its Girls’ teams have won 5 of 6 NHIAA Championships. Of note, the Boys’ first NHIAA State Championship was in 1970, when they became the first team other than Notre Dame (of Berlin) and Berlin High School to take the crown. With us today, are six (former) players of the two teams, including their two Head Coaches and their wives: John Dodds and (Hall of Famer) Dick Dodds, of Hanover High School. It’s my pleasure to announce the Hanover High School Mauraders as next year’s honored team. Please help me give a warm welcome to the Marauders of Hanover.”

2013 Prep School All-State Teams Announced

Manchester, NH – May 17, 2013

The Prep School Hockey Coaches of NH announced their 2012-13 All-State selections for both the boys and girls divisions. The eight prep schools in New Hampshire are: Brewster Academy; Holderness School; Kimball Union Academy; New Hampton School; Phillips Exeter Academy; Proctor Academy; St. Paul’s School and Tilton School.

Dana Barbin, long time head coach of Phillips Exeter said “we are extremely pleased to continue our partnership with the NH Legends of Hockey”. The Legends have provided framed certificates for each recipient of both of boys and girls teams.

2013 Senior All-Star Games Entertaining

Senior All-Star Classic
Last Saturday night the Third Annual Senior All-Star Classic was held at the Douglas N. Everett Arena in Concord. A terrific game was played and a very large crowd of family members watched the Red All-Stars and White All-Stars. To view rosters, click here.

The two teams were selected by the Coaches Association from Divisions I, II and III. Each team used all three goaltenders: For White, Brett Glendye of Merrimack started the game before giving way to Nic Phair of Salem and then to Matt Marchman of Pinkerton. Kurt Mitchell of Bedford (White) broke the scoreless tie in the middle frame on assists from Chris O’Hara and Cullen Willey, both of Bedford. Netminders for the Red All-Stars were starter Ryan Slatky of Trinity, Brennan Young of Oyster River and James Montgomery of Hanover. Ryan Sullivan of Winnacunnet scored late in the contest on assists from Eli Cobb of Dover and Chris Lovell of Bishop Guertin.

From these players, the Coaches Association will select one team to represent New Hampshire in the Annual Make A Wish game and players will be notified by the coaches. However, when we receive the announcement, we will send out an enewsletter. The game is scheduled for Saturday July 13, 2013 and will be played at the University of Vermont in Burlington. Teams will wear the NH of Legends of Hockey uniforms which were worn in Concord.

Legends President Roland Olivier congratulates Austin Sprague of Central. Olivier presented Austin with his First Team All-State Award along with the Player of the Year Award for Division I from the NH Legends of Hockey. The All-State Awards were selected by the High School Coaches Association.

Division III Senior All-Star Classic
On Saturday afternoon the 7th Annual Division III Senior All-Star Game was held at the Laconia Ice Arena. The game featured 26 seniors from nine of the twelve division III schools. Team North was made up of seniors from Berlin, Kennett, Moultonborough-Inter Lakes & Conval High School earned the victory 11-7 over team South made up of players from John Stark-Hopkinton, Souhegan, Belmont-Gilford, Laconia-Winnisquam and Kearsarge.

Senior Anthony LaRusso of Kennett High School earned the game’s MVP honors with a 2 goal-3 assist performance. Other players considered for the honor was Connor Todd also of Kennett (3G 1A), Tim Casey of Moultonborough-Inter Lakes (3 G), Jeff O’Neil of Berlin (3 A), Simon Becka of John Stark-Hopkinton (3 G), Keith Galli of John Stark-Hopkinton (2 G) and Ryan Peterson of Souhegan High School (14 Saves).

The game featured the normal three 15 minute periods as well as a skills competition before each intermission. In the six skills competitions events the teams played to a 3-3 tie. That 3-3 tie was included in the final score. This game was sponsored and hosted by Laconia Ice Arena.

Consistent with its mission of preserving the history of ice hockey, and growing the sport of ice hockey, in New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey “Legends” supports secondary school hockey by awarding certificates to New Hampshire high school and prep school All-State players and coaches of the year, and sponsors the Annual Senior All-Star Hockey Classic and Make-A-Wish games. The Legends also actively solicits historical, hockey-related artifacts for preservation and display to the general public. Late last year, the Legends launched their new online museum. This museum contains the state’s hockey history and heritage gathered from periodicals, game film, trophies, photos, uniforms, other clothing, etc. The museum is searchable by the number of fields such as team, player, jerseys etc. While there are several hundred photos currently available for viewing new ones will be added on a ongoing basis so be sure to check back frequently.

2013 All-State Teams Announced
The NH High School Coaches Association (NHHSC) announced today their 2012-13 All-State selections for Girls and Boys Div. I, II and III. The NHHSC is comprised of high school coaches from across the state. Duncan Walsh, President of the NHHSC and Head Coach of Concord HS Hockey team said “we are pleased to continue our partnership with the NH Legends of Hockey”. For the third year, the Legends are providing framed certificates for each recipient. Those is attendance for the boys Senior All-Star Classic will receive theirs after the game.

2013 Senior All-Star Teams Announced
The NH High School Senior All-Star Classic will be held Saturday March 16th at the Douglas N. Everett Arena in Concord beginning at 7:00 pm. The NHHSC selected two teams who will compete against each other in the Annual Red White Game. The players will wear the Legends jerseys for the game pictured below. Tickets may be purchased at the door and prices are $5.00 for Adults and $2.00 for students and seniors.

At this time rosters have not been submitted to us. They will be posted in this article on as soon as we receive them.

The Girl’s will also be competing in Vermont and both teams will wear the Legends uniforms.

“Our organization is proud to support and celebrate the history and game of hockey in NH and wanted to do something to recognize these special high school athletes” stated Roland Olivier, President of the Legends.

2012 Golf Classic Another Success

Thank you to everyone that supported our annual golf event. We are grateful to the players, sponsors, contributors (gifts in kind) and volunteers that help make this event better each year. Once again we enjoyed wonderful weather and it was a great way to spend time with our hockey family and friends.

Golfers received a welcome package, which included a four pack of sandstone coasters with the NH Legends of Hockey logo affixed. Golfers who arrived early were provided free chair massages prior to tee off by Andrea Kuhman of Arias Spa.

The event was kicked off with a message from Roland Olivier, President of the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey (Legends). He welcomed the players and thanked the volunteers and businesses that donated gifts for the “Legends Ultimate Raffle”, Vachon Clukay & Company PC of Manchester, our 2012 Title Sponsor, and the 31 other sponsors for their support. Olivier mentioned the 2012 Induction Ceremony is slated for Sunday October 28, 2012 at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord and will begin at 10:30 am.

We will induct seven new members into our Hall of Fame including two in the Coaches Category: Dick Dodds of Hanover, NH; Jim Tufts of Exeter, NH; Jim Rivers of Contoocook, NH in the Media Category and four in the Player Category: Peter Maher of Exeter, NH; Julie Sasner of Gloucester, MA; Kathleen Twomey of Londonderry, NH and Dicky Valliere of Berlin (who died on March 25, 1998).

Each year the Legends salute institutions and other local hockey programs and this year we recognize the Berlin High School Mountaineers and their long storied history. This winter the Mountaineers will celebrate their eighty-third season of hockey. Over the years they have won nine NHIAA State Championships as well as one New England Championship in 1966-67.

The Monarchs will also recognize the Berlin High School Mountaineers when they wear uniforms adorned with a Mountaineers logo on their jersey shoulders when they host the Binghamton Senators at 4:00 pm at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The New Hampshire Legends of Hockey gather nominations for election to the Hall of Fame, and raise money to preserve the donated archives, including historical literature, records, photos, film, clothing, equipment, trophies, etc. These collected artifacts are available for the viewing public in Berlin, Concord, Manchester and Nashua and on our on-line museum. We continue to search for artifacts and film from the old days. Anyone wishing to donate either is welcomed to do so.

Gillies Taken by Calgary, Hart goes to Tampa

PITTSBURGH – Two Maine teenagers — Brian Hart of Cumberland and Jon Gillies of South Portland — were selected Saturday on the second day of the NHL draft.


NHL DRAFT – DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS

Some notable selections of Day 2 of the NHL draft, with round taken, overall pick number in parentheses, position and most recent team:

Maine players. Hart, a forward, was taken in the second round by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 53rd overall pick. The former Greely High standout played at Phillips Exeter Academy for two seasons and will attend Harvard in the fall.

Gillies, a goalie, was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round. He was the 75th pick overall. Gillies spent the past two years with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League and is headed to Providence College, where he’ll be a teammate of Hart’s brother, Kevin.

Jon Gillies, NH Prep Stars Update, NHL Draft
Jon Gillies, one of the top-rated goalies available for next month’s NHL draft, is returning to New England to play Division I college hockey. On Monday, May 21, Gillies, a 6-foot-5 goalie from South Portland, signed a letter of intent to play at Providence College, a member of Hockey East. Gillies said he made his decision Monday morning before his family flew back to Maine from Indiana after watching him graduate last weekend from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. Gillies’ final ranking for the upcoming NHL draft is 6 of 36 North American goaltenders. To read more on Gillies Click Here.

Prep Stars Honored
On April 28, the Prep School Hockey Coaches of NH announced their 2011-12 All-State selections for the boys division. The eight prep schools in New Hampshire are: Brewster Academy; Holderness School; Kimball Union Academy; New Hampton School; Phillips Exeter Academy; Proctor Academy; St. Paul’s School and Tilton School. Dana Barbin, long time head coach of Phillips Exeter and recent inductee into the NH Legends Hockey Hall of Fame said “we are extremely pleased to partner with the NH Legends of Hockey”. For the first time, the Legends are providing framed certificates for each recipient. Three of those players, Brian Hart of Phillips Exeter, Matthew Beattie of Phillips Exeter and Gavin Bayreuther of the Holderness School were ranked #54, 108 and 186 respectively by the NHL Central Scouting final rankings. LA Kings Manchester Monarchs Alumni
As the Los Angeles Kings begin challenge for the Stanley Cup tonight many former Manchester Monarchs have played a significant role in their 12-2 run through the first three rounds. Fourteen players on the Kings roster had suited up for the Monarchs. That group includes key contributors like Captain Dustin Brown, former UMass – Amherst and all-world goaltender Jonathan Quick and up-and-coming youngster Dwight King. In case you missed the release, on May 16, New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Announced its newest members of our Hall of Fame. The Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon is scheduled for Sunday October 28th the Grappone Convention Center in Concord. Red Gendron Keynote Speaker in Manchester

The Kiwanis Club of Berlin is hosting a fundraiser Thursday May 4th at Fratello’s in Manchester. The event is open to anyone fom the hockey community who would like to attend and will begin at 6:30 pm. Tickets are available through Wednesday May 3rd, click here for more information. This unique event will bring together former residents of Berlin who have a share connection and fondness for the city and want to give something back to the community. The idea is to meet others who are originally from Berlin, share a meal, and “pay it forward” by helping current Berlin students further their education. This event will raise funds for Berlin Kiwanis Club annual scholarship.

The event will feature a keynote address entitled “Start with Why” by Dennis “Red” Gendron, Assistant Coach, Men’s Hockey, Yale University.

Gendron, a Berlin Native, a three-time hockey captain and 1979 graduate of New England College (Henniker, N.H.), spent the last 21 years coaching the sport. He began as an assistant coach at Berlin High School where he also taught History and Economics from 1979-1981. He has since coached at the University of Maine, UMass, and for USA Hockey.

He spent 11 seasons with the New Jersey Devils’ organization as a scout and assistant coach, including Stanley Cup Championships in 1995, 2000 and 2003. Part of his duty with the Devils included serving as head coach of the AHL affiliate in Albany for the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. In 2007 Red was inducted into th NH Legends of Hockey Hall of Fame. Gendron and his wife, Janet, have two daughters, Katelyn and Allison.

The evening will also include a performance by LogJam. Bred and spread in the Great North Woods, the duo LogJam, cut their teeth to the Berlin Rock Scene like a BMS bandsaw to pine. Weaving their way through the stages of the White Mountain Chalet, the Joliette Snowshoe Club, the Sanborn, Dubriel’s, and countless BHS dances, the boys were always front and center to hear the sounds of Berlin NH. Now they take stage, to give back a little of what they have received.

The Kiwanis Club of Berlin NH is a service organization of caring men and women from all walks of life. Our objective is to bring aid to children in need. The majority of our efforts benefit children in the communities of Berlin, Gorham and Milan. We serve by doing hands-on projects in our communities, by sponsoring K-Kids, Key Club and sponsoring fund raising activities, which provide monetary support for children’s programs and through personal involvement in the giving of our time and skills.
