Concord, NH

Master of Ceremonies, Bob Norton, and the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Board of Directors inducted seven new members into the New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame, as a record crowd of more than 350 family members, friends, dignitaries and guests looked on. L to R: Karen Wonoski – Alumni Coordinator; Rick Middleton; Frank Simonetti; Keith Crowder; Bruce Crowder; Terry O’Reilly; Ray Bourque; Ken Linseman and Kerry Collins – Director of Community Relations.

State Senator Lou D’Alessandro, longtime Legends supporter and a former Legends Board member, delivered a letter from The Honorable Governor Maggie Hassan and delivered State Senate Resolutions and State of New Hampshire Citations honoring the Hall of Fame Class of 2014 and the Hanover High Boy’s and Girl’s teams.

Key Note Speaker Taylor Chace

Taylor Chace, of Hampton Falls, NH, was the Keynote Speaker at this year’s Ceremony. He spoke of his days learning to skate with Jim Tufts “Learn to Skate” program at the Phillips Exeter Rink in Exeter, NH. The Tufts family has had a huge impact on youth hockey in the seacoast of New Hampshire and its grassroots programs.

Taylor was a standout New England hockey prospect when, at 16 years old and playing for Sean Tremblay and Chris Grassie with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs, he suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury. Taylor spoke of how the injury changed his life, as he learned to live with his injury. Taylor described how met Tom Moulton, who introduced him to Rick Middleton and the sport of sled hockey. Taylor described how he regained his passion for hockey through the sport of sled hockey and was once again motivated to compete in athletics. Taylor has since represented Team USA at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games, winning a Bronze (Torino Italy 2006) Gold (Vancouver, Canada 2010) and Gold (Sochi, Russia 2014). Today, Taylor continues to coach sled hockey with the Northeast Passage Sled Hockey Team out of the University of New Hampshire. The Legends recognized the Hanover High School Marauders, whose Boys’ team played its first season in 1933-34 and the Girls’ team, which began play in 1987. Click here to view Induction booklet.

Jack Turco addresses the huge crowd

Jack Turco, former Boys’ Coach at Hanover High gave a brief recap on the history of the Hanover High Boys’ team which began play in the state in 1932-33 and was the first team outside of Berlin to win a state title in 1970. The Hanover Girls’ team started its successful tradition in 1987.

Hanover High School’s tradition of success is evidenced by the fact that the Boys have won 8 NHIAA State Championships since 1970 and the Girls have won 6 of 7 NHIAA State Championships that have been contested.

Paramount to the success of Hanover’s High School teams has been the development and continued success of a feeder program that develops the next generation of high school players. This program has been sustained by youngsters in Hanover learning to skate on Occom Pond, growing up watching and cheering for the Dartmouth College Women’s and Men’s Hockey Teams and, the continued success of a strong Youth Hockey program.

Finally, the Hanover community continues to embrace, support and nurture a strong high school hockey tradition. The entire Hanover community was particularly proud of Steve Shirreffs, Hanover High Scholl Class of 1994, and Princeton University Hockey All-American, being chosen this year to be inducted into the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Hall of Fame since Steve represents all that is best in the long Hanover hockey tradition.

Executive Director Jim Hayes announced the team that will be honored during the 2015 Hockey Hall of Fame Ceremony. Next year, The Legends will honor the Nashua Royals, a team that began play in 1948. The Royals, whose first two captains were named Dionne, originally began play as a boys team, in the 16 to 21 age bracket, eventually becoming a men’s team. In 1952, the Royals beat the Rye Seahawks for the New Hampshire Amateur Class B title. The Royals were instrumental in the success of the Granite State Hockey League. In the 1960’s, they were coached by Ron Peters, Hall of Fame ’08. The Royals played in three straight GSHL Championships, winning in the 1965-66 season over the Tam O’Shanters of Manchester. Two of their top scorers were Buzz Littell, Hall of Fame ’06 and Pete Merrill in addition to the Legends own Leo Gould, Hall of Fame ’06. One of the Royals’ most notable players was Bobby Sheehan, who played for the team at age 16, and eventually went on to play for 14 years in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens and several other teams. The Royals concluded play after the 1966-67 season. Hayes asked everyone to help him welcome next year’s honored team, the Nashua Royals.

NH Legends of Hockey, Bauer Hockey Donate 30 Sets of Equipment to Local Associations – Support Geared Toward Goal of Continuing to Grow the Game in NH

MANCHESTER, NH – December 9, 2013 – The New Hampshire Legends of Hockey, a New Hampshire non-profit organization dedicated to preserving New Hampshire’s ice hockey history, maintaining the state’s Hockey Hall of Fame, and promoting the sport to New Hampshire’s youth, today announced a donation of approximately 30 sets of new hockey equipment to the Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association (MRYHA) and Berlin Youth Hockey Association.

L to R: Steve Tempesta, President – MRYHA; Bill Houghton, MRYHA coach; Tory Mazzola, Bauer and Legends Director; Mike Williamson, MRYHA coach; Jay High, Legends Director; Brian Caldwell, MRYHA’s Mite Director; and John Normand, Legends Vice President

“Hockey has such a rich history in New Hampshire, from the first organized hockey game played in the U.S.at St. Paul’s School in 1883, to the expansive hockey landscape that exists here today for players of all skill levels,” said NH Legends of Hockey President Gregory Moffett. “We’re proud to be partnering with Manchester and Berlin Youth Hockey to help continue NH’s hockey tradition and attract even more kids to this great sport. With these two communities as our starting point, we hope to expand this effort in the coming years to support youth programs in other parts of the state.”

The donation, having a retail value of approximately $12,000, will help to grow the game of hockey in the Granite State by providing equipment to kids who want to try the sport and participate in learn-to-play programs. The equipment presented today includes a variety of sizes for kids aged 5 – 10 and includes goalie equipment for those wanting to play net.

The equipment will be made available in Manchester at West Side Arena and in Berlin at Notre Dame Ice Arena. These learn-to-play programs will be locally administered by the MRYHA and Berlin Youth Hockey Association.

“As MRYHA’s Mite Director, one of my main priorities for my organization is to grow the game, which starts at the youngest of levels. In order for us to be successful, we need to move to different, non-traditional demographics in our society and offer children who are not brought up around hockey a chance to play this great game. With this help from Bauer Hockey and the NH Legends of Hockey, we can now reach out to children and families in our community who may not have given hockey a chance,” said Brian Caldwell of MRYHA.” Our program was once one of the largest not-or-profit hockey organizations in the country, and we are celebrating our 50th anniversary next year, making us one of the oldest as well. We’re looking forward to expanding this to many more families next season.”

The NH Legends’ equipment donation program is made possible through its partnership with Bauer Hockey, a New Hampshire company with its global headquarters in Exeter. Bauer Hockey has been a long-standing sponsor of the NH Legends and has notched another assist by helping to provide the new gear.

“As a New Hampshire company we’re happy to support this local initiative and help grow the game in communities around the Granite State,” said Tory Mazzola, Global Communications Manager for Bauer Hockey.

Five New Members Join the Hall of Fame in 2013

December 2, 2013

Master of Ceremonies, Bob Norton, and the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Board of Directors welcomed five new inductees into the New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame, as a crowd of more than 280 family members, friends, dignitaries and guests looked on. The Legends also paid tribute to Concord High School’s Boys’ and Girl’s ice hockey programs and their tradition of excellence, including 8 State Championships. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on October 27, 2013 at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord and marked the NH Legends’ twelfth year holding the event.

Greg Moffett, current President of the Legends’ Board of Directors, welcomed the large audience and thanked them for supporting the 2013 Hall of Fame inductees and the Concord High hockey program. Moffett offered special thanks to Bauer Hockey, the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Hall of Fame Ceremony, for its continuing support of the Legends’ mission, and he praised this year’s Co-Title Sponsors, St. Paul’s School and Vachon Clukay& Company, PC., for their significant financial contributions. Moffett also recognized New Hampshire Distributors, Inc. which again hosted the pre-event Social Hour, and thanked the 27 other individuals and businesses who helped make the Hall of Fame Ceremony possible through their Gold, Silver, and Bronze-level sponsorships.

The Honorable Governor Maggie Hassan congratulated this year’s Hall of Fame inductees and praised them for their significant accomplishments and achievements. The Governor spoke of her appreciation for the game of hockey and the team-building skills and self-confidence it promotes. She also spoke directly to the current members of the Concord High Girls’ Hockey team who attended and encouraged them to reach for the sky. Governor Hassan concluded her remarks by providing State of New Hampshire Citations for each of the 2013 inductees.

State Senator Lou D’Alessandro, longtime Legends supporter and a former Board member, delivered State Senate Resolutions, honoring each of the members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013. Concord Mayor, Jim Bouley, extended a welcome on behalf of the Capital City and briefly traced the history of ice hockey in the City of Concord, from the first hockey game played in 1883 at St. Paul’s School to the more recent Black Ice Pond Hockey Championship at White Park. Bouley remarked that the Black Ice event will be held at Concord’s White Park again this year in late January, and he encouraged everyone to participate.

Tara Mounsey

Keynote speaker, Tara Mounsey,  a two-time Olympic ice hockey medalist and former Concord High standout, recalled her early days playing in the Concord Youth Hockey system and of the various parents, coaches, and friends from within the Greater-Concord community and across the state who influenced her outstanding hockey career. Mounsey, who is currently a Nurse Practitioner, spoke of the valuable relationships she’s developed through hockey and of the life-lessons hockey taught her along the way. Mounsey also praised the current Concord Girl’s Hockey Coach, Stacy Boudrias, and offered that the Concord High Girls program is poised to do great things in the future under Coach Boudrias’s leadership.

The Legends recognized the Concord High School Crimson Tide, whose boys’ team played its first season in 1933-34 and has won 8 State Titles between 1977 and 2010. Concord High teams have competed in 19 State Championship Title Games. During the luncheon, attendees were shown a video tribute to the Crimson Tide boy’s and girls teams, recapping various Concord High victories.

Duncan Matthews, former Boys’ Coach at Concord High, recounted his days growing up across the street from Concord’s White Park, watching players like Rusty Martin play on the White Park Pond in the early 60’s. Mathews recalled his days as the Captain of the Crimson Tide hockey team in 1969-70 and, eventually, coaching CHS for two years. Matthews had special words of praise for Concord High’s current boy’s hockey coach, Dunc Walsh, and his string of successes behind the bench.

Concord High School principal Gene Connolly thanked the Legends for honoring their school this year and for recognizing the great ice hockey tradition of the Crimson Tide. President Moffett presented Mr. Connolly with a replica jersey from Concord’s first Championship season in 1976-77. Connolly thanked Moffett and the Legends for the gift, which he said will be placed in the School’s trophy case.

Executive Director Jim Hayes announces the team that will be honored during the 2014 Hockey Hall of Fame Ceremony. “In 2014, the Legends will be honoring a school whose Boy’s team has long been a cornerstone of Division I Hockey. This school began playing ice hockey in 1933 and is celebrating its 80th year of competition this year. In addition, this school’s Girls’ program, founded in 1987, is entering its 27th year of play. The school’s Boys’ teams have competed in 15 NHIAA State Championship games, winning 8 of them, and its Girls’ teams have won 5 of 6 NHIAA Championships. Of note, the Boys’ first NHIAA State Championship was in 1970, when they became the first team other than Notre Dame (of Berlin) and Berlin High School to take the crown. With us today, are six (former) players of the two teams, including their two Head Coaches and their wives: John Dodds and (Hall of Famer) Dick Dodds, of Hanover High School. It’s my pleasure to announce the Hanover High School Mauraders as next year’s honored team. Please help me give a warm welcome to the Marauders of Hanover.”
