Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Gaudet

June 7, 2018

The New Hampshire Legends of Hockey is pleased to announce six inductees for its 2018 Hall of Fame class, who will be formally inducted during a ceremony on October 21, 2018.  The ceremony will be held at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord NH.  The ceremony is open to the public and tickets can be purchased by contacting Executive Director Jim Hayes at hayes743@comcast.net.

In addition, the hockey history of the Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association (MRYHA) will be recognized. Hall of Fame Induction tickets will be available to the general public on September 1st.

Our event will begin with an 11:30 am social hour and for the first time, our ceremony will have Co-Master of Ceremony, Ken Cail and Chris Garrett and the Key Note Speaker will be Dick Umile.

Brendan Creagh of Hanover, Brian Foster of Pembroke and Rich Ryerson of Concord are being inducted as players. Dartmouth College coach Bob Gaudet is entering the Hall as a coach. Don McKinnon is being inducted as an official and the late Tony Urban is being inducted posthumously as a builder.

Here is a closer look at the six inductees:

Brendan Creagh. In three years playing for Hanover High School in the late 1980s, Creagh was the team’s leading scorer all three seasons and left as the all-time leading scorer among defensemen. After a prep year at Phillips Andover he moved on to the University of Vermont, where he played four seasons and served as assistant captain as a senior year. A skilled, puck-moving defenseman, he played briefly in the AHL and enjoyed a four-year career in the ECHL.

Brian Foster. After starring for the Concord Capitals and then the Manchester Junior Monarchs, where he won an EJHL championship, Foster joined the UNH hockey team on a full scholarship. After two seasons backing up standout Kevin Regan, he assumed the starting role as a junior and went 19-11-4 with a 2.68 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. He stopped 40 shots in one of the most memorable games in UNH history, a 6-5 overtime win over North Dakota in the NCAA tournament. As a senior he posted a 2.98 GAA and .908 save percentage, was named First Team Hockey East and Second Team All-America. After that went on to a 12-year pro career in the CHL, ECHL and AHL.

Bob Gaudet. Entering his 22nd as head coach at Dartmouth College, his alma mater, this fall, Gaudet is poised to become the all-time winningest coach in school history. His 305 wins at Dartmouth trail only Eddie Jeremiah (308). Twice he has been named ECAC Coach of the Year (1994-95 at Brown, 2005-06 at Dartmouth), and he led the team to the ECAC Hockey title in 2006 and the Ivy League title a year later. In three decades as a college head coach, he has worked with and developed several players who have gone on to play in the NHL, including Ben Lovejoy of Canaan, who was a Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins.

Don McKinnon. McKinnon moved to Durham in 1960 to assist his wife’s father in the millwork business. He’d refereed Ontario Hockey League games in his native Canada, and would go on the call five NHIAA championship games, including his first one between Hanover and Berlin in 1966. It was estimated he refereed more than 75 games in the Granite State Hockey League before that league terminated in 1967. He was also a fixture in the college game, calling more than 200 games in the ECAC and refereeing games in Divisions I, II and III, as well as the New England Hockey League.

Rich Ryerson. Ryerson skated for four seasons at St. Paul’s School, the last three under legendary coach Bill Matthews, where he earned the reputation as a player who could be used in all situations. He scored 38 points as a junior and served as co-captain as a senior. From there, he went on to Dartmouth, where he played 111 games from 1976-80, scoring 29 goals and adding 26 assists for 55 points. Twice in his career he helped the Big Green reach the NCAA final four.

Tony Urban. Growing up in the Berlin-Gorham area, Urban spent nearly four decades involved with high school hockey in the state. He spent 36 years as chairman of the NHIAA Hockey Committee, and served on the High School Hockey Federation for Hockey Rules Committee from 1977-88. He was inducted into the NHIAA Hall of Fame in 2008 and was instrumental in moving NHIAA championship games from the Whittemore Center at UNH to the SNHU Arena in Manchester.

This was the first ever Hole N One in twelve years, and from this day forth will be called “The Scott Citroni 4th Hole.”

Our mission is simple: “We honor, celebrate and preserve New Hampshire’s rich ice hockey history and support the development of hockey”.

This year, the Legends will introduce Robert Sprague and the memory of Boston hickory golf-club and golf ball maker G.S. Sprague (1870 – 1928).  Robert is the great-grandson of Boston clubmaker G.S. Sprague, and portrays his great-grandfather at charity golf events throughout New England – will join us!

ON ONE OF THE PAR THREE HOLES, you’ll have the chance to hit one of his 1912 mesh golf balls and see how well you like Mr. Sprague’s best hand-forged mashie irons “using only the best native New Hampshire hickory shafts”.  G.S. Sprague’s factory – located in Boston’s North End – hand crafted over 1,000 golf playing sets annually and hand-formed over 2,000 new mesh balls.

Tough Sledding – The story of the 2002 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team

March 6, 2018

Former Boston Bruins Captain Rick Middleton (and Legends Hall of Fame member) and Tom Moulton (Legends Board member) coached the 2002 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team in Salt Lake City, Utah, to an unlikely gold medal.

Rick Middleton crashes the ice after winning gold.

The team inspired the city and the game and was played in front of a capacity crowd of 8,600 people at the E-Center.

The time has come to tell the dramatic story through a scripted film. This story has similarities to the Disney produced movie “Miracle” that told the story of a bunch of college kids who beat the unbeatable Russians in the 1980 Olympics and went on to win Gold!

We believe our story, this movie “Tough Sledding” will tug at your heart and bring you out of your seat like no movie since “Miracle”. There is a depth at the heart of “Tough Sledding” and the characters whose stories will drive the movie. It is a story of seeking fulfillment as individuals against a backdrop of obstacles facing the team goal.

Click on our Indiegogo site https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/tough-sledding-sports-usa#/ and watch the ripomatic “Tough Sledding” – it will be the first movie about a Paralympic sports team. A ripomatic is a short compilation of scenes from other sports movies that will give you a good idea of what our story is all about.

For just $10, we will include your name in the credits and your donation is tax deductible!  Donate: https://igg.me/at/toughsledding

A LITTLE HISTORY
Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association (MRYHA), a non-profit organization established in 1965, is dedicated to providing children in Southern NH opportunities compete at all levels of youth hockey. To put it simply, a few of the of founding members like Alphonse Corriveau, Paul Wise and Hubert McDonough Jr. said “we just wanted to give young kids a chance to play hockey”.

For over 50 years MRYHA has done just that. During its peak, well over 1,500 kids participated in MRYHA annually. It’s a bit different today given the evolution of youth sports in the United States towards for-profit programs.   MRYHA still continues to be the largest program in the state with more than 500 boy’s and girl’s playing and well 100 dedicated volunteers who continue to ensure MRYHA’s mission is fulfilled.

Numerous hockey players growing up through MRYHA have gone onto successful college and professional hockey careers.   A few notable include  players include: Rand Pecknold; Jeff Serowik; Hubert McDonough; Jeff Giuliano and more recently, Tim Schaller and Zach Sanford.

We hope you can help us celebrate the history of MRYHA on October 21, 2018.

Norm is depicted below wearing his Hall of Fame jersey with Ken McKinnon and myself who were the coaches of TEAM USA.  A banquet for the players and new inductees into the Hall of Fame was held on Saturday evening with over 250  attendees.

A reception was held at the US Embassy in Ottawa for TEAM USA with the US Ambassador to Canada.

This game was the first in what is planned as an annual event. Next year (2018)  players who are US Citizens, play hockey regularly, and were born in 1938 or before will be eligible to play.

McKinnon, founder of the Lakes Region Legends adult men’s hockey league at the Merrill Fay Arena, will be in Canada, with a team of players over 80 years old who will be representing the United States in the Canada 150 Vintage Hockey game.

He hopes that in a few years he’ll be able to play in that game himself, provided that his knee responds well to surgery he expects will be taking place in the not too distant future.

“I’ve had my hips replaced but the knee is something else,” says McKinnon, who has been taking to the ice twice a week in recent weeks playing for the Patrick’s Pub team in the Legends league.

“I can’t get around like I used to, but it’s still fun to be out on the ice and playing hockey,” said McKinnon, who was still scoring goals when he played for Moe Marchand’s “Les Boys” team in Tokyo in 2009.

Not that scoring goals is anything new for McKinnon, who shares the University of New Hampshire record for scoring six goals in one game, something that took place 56 years ago when he was a junior at UNH.

He says that when he first saw the University of New Hampshire hockey rink in September of 1958 he was shocked.

“It was an outdoor rink and all you could see was sand with weeds growing up,” says McKinnon, a native of Toronto, Canada, who was the first Canadian hockey player to attend UNH.

He recalls that head coach Horace “Pepper” Martin, who had recruited him to play at UNH, realized that he would be upset after his first look at the ice rink and hastened to assure him that the Batchelder rink would be covered in a few years because the legislature was working on a plan to fund it.

“I was from Canada and I knew about Parliament but didn’t know anything about state legislatures, so I wasn’t sure what he was talking about,” said McKinnon, who added that, despite Martin’s assurance, the rink wouldn’t be covered until 1966, four years after he graduated.

McKinnon recalls showing up at UNH that year with a steamer trunk and being assigned to Alumni House, located in what was then known as the President’s Triangle, and meeting Dick Eustis and Tommy Cannon, who were on the same floor. Eustis was a star football player at UNH, where he was the pass-catching “lonesome end” on the football team, and held the state record for most points scored in his basketball career at Exeter High School, breaking a record formerly held by Reeve Tracy of Tilton-Northfield High School.

With the hockey season starting late that year, McKinnon played on the freshman football team, where he was an end, and also on the spring track team, where he was a pole-vaulter and high jumper.

“I later on got a job working at the Tau Omega sorority and just stuck with hockey after that.” he says. He also served as president of the Sophomore Sphinx, the group that introduces freshman to college, and was recruited by Dean of Students Rob Gardiner to serve on the men’s judiciary board, which imposed punishments for rules infractions.

He also had a good time on the ice at the Batchelder rink, scoring six goals in a 10-4 win over Connecticut in February of 1961 to tie a UNH record. In his senior year he was captain of the team and was presented with the Jerry Culver Award for sportsmanship and leadership as well as the Roger LeClerc Award as most valuable player.

New Hampshire has been his home since college. He taught and coached at Concord High for two years before going into insurance business in 1964 at United Life and Accident Insurance Company in Concord, which was run by Concord area sports ;legend Tom Hardiman, who had starred in three sports in Concord and went on to Georgetown University where he starred in football and basketball and spent a year playing football for the Chicago Bears in 1951.

“He was my mentor and a great guy to work for. He encouraged me to get involved in officiating and told me it was ok to take time off during the week and that I could come in and catch up on my work on Saturdays,” he says.

McKinnon was the founder and president of the Granite State Hockey League, which would come to include the Laconia Lakers, who played at Leavitt Park and was led by players like Pop Whalen, Dick Ryerson and goalie John Richardson.

He played forward for the Concord Shamrocks, Concord Coachmen, and the Eastern Olympics. He later played in the Capital City Hockey League for 12 years and still competes in the Laconia Legends of Hockey League.

McKinnon is also highly regarded for his officiating. He became a member of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association in 1962 and he wore the stripes until he retired in 1991. He officiated nine NH High School State Championships, two NCAA Division II Championships, several other ECAC Tournaments and the Beanpot Tournament.

He is a member of the NH Legends of Hockey Hall of Fame, UNH Hall of Fame, the Capital City Hockey League Hall of Fame, and the Lakes Region Legends Hall of Fame.

“When I retired from officiating and moved to Alton in 1991, I was the oldest guy playing in the Capitol City league. Merrill Fay’s son got ahold of me and told me they were looking to form a league for players over 35 and asked me to help. Before long we had 35 guys signed up and the first 22 were put on two teams. We went to four teams and then to six teams and have been playing Sunday and Wednesday nights for years,” said McKinnon, who four years ago turned over leadership of the Legends league to Ray Vigue.

The league has since expanded to 10 teams and plays games three nights a week.

McKinnon spends most of his winters in Florida, where he plays hockey at the Igloo Ice Arena in Ellington, and knows many of the players who will be taking part in the Ottawa tournament this weekend.

“This should be a lot of fun and it’s sure to bring back a lot of good memories for the players,” says McKinnon.
