Frozen Four Begins Today

Today, the Frozen Four begins and on Saturday night either Yale, Quinnipiac, St. Cloud State or UMass-Lowell will be crowned the NCAA hockey champion for the 2012-13 season.

In the 4:30 pm game the Yale Bulldogs will take on UMass-Lowell River Hawks and in the nightcap, the Quinnipiac Bobcats face off against the St. Cloud State Huskies.  Both games will be televised on ESPN2.

With three teams from the East along with St. Cloud State, one of these clubs will become a first time National Champion.

The winners of today's game will skate for the Crown on Saturday night at 7:00 pm and will be televised on ESPN.

For Yale and Quinnipiac there are a few individuals with New Hampshire ties.  For the Bulldogs, freshman forward Cody Learned of Amherst plays for Yale and their Associate Coach Red Gendron hails from Berlin, NH.  Red was inducted into the NH Legends of Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.  Red has a very impressive coaching resume spanning back to 1979.  To view Yale Hockey site click on LOGO.

For the Bobcats, their Head Coach hails from Bedford, NH.  Rand Pecknold grew up playing youth hockey for Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association and went on to play high school hockey for two years for Manchester West.  While at West, he and Jeff Serowik helped West to the NHIAA finals as sophomores, before losing to Exeter in 1983.  Rand then attended Lawrence Academy for two years, graduating in 1986, while playing his senior year with another well-known Manchester native, Kyle McDonough.

Many hockey fans from northern New England will remember Rand's father.  Back in the the late 60's and into the 70's teams like the Manchester Black Hawks (later the Monarchs), Fitchburg Hornets, Braintree Hawks and Lowell Chiefs all did battle with Wayne's Concord Eastern Olympics.  On defense was a rugged defenseman who wore #11, had a big black beard and a unique black helmet.  That was Wayne Pecknold, seen in photo against the Manchester Monarchs circa (1972-73).  Off the ice Wayne received his doctorate at MIT while teaching there too.  Wayne Pecknold passed in 2000.
